Elias Pettersson showcased his prowess with two goals and an assist, propelling the Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 triumph over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night, which saw them ascend to the top of the Western Conference standings.
Joining Pettersson on the scoresheet was Conor Garland, while Quinn Hughes and J.T. Miller each contributed with a pair of assists. The victory bolstered the Canucks’ record to 43-18-8, nudging them one point ahead of the Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Avalanche in the West.
Vancouver’s goalie, Casey DeSmith, delivered a solid performance with 15 saves, marking his first win since stepping in for the injured Thatcher Demko last week. Amidst challenges, the Canucks remained resolute, emphasizing mental toughness in navigating the latter part of the season.
“We’ve got to be the team that doesn’t go away,” remarked Miller. “Things aren’t going to go our way down the stretch here every day. We’ve got to understand that it’s going to take a mentally tough group to win hockey games.”
Rasmus Dahlin notched both goals for the Sabres, who, despite their valiant effort, fell short. Devon Levi, making his first NHL start since January, displayed commendable goaltending, stopping 31 of 33 shots.
Reflecting on the game, Canucks coach Rick Tocchet commended his team’s resilience, particularly their defensive prowess against a formidable opponent. Despite a late push from the Sabres, Vancouver held their ground, ultimately securing victory with an empty-net goal from Pettersson.
Dahlin’s late goal added suspense, but the Sabres couldn’t find the equalizer. Pettersson’s performance, along with contributions from his teammates, ensured the Canucks’ victory.
