Oswaldo Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to tie the game, and Juan Soto followed with his first Yankees home run to give New York the lead in a 5-3 win over the Houston Astros on Saturday night.
Anthony Volpe added another run with a home run in the eighth inning, securing the Yankees’ third consecutive victory. This marks the first time since 2003 that the Yankees have started the season 3-0. Their resilience in coming back from behind in the sixth inning or later in all three games makes them the ninth team in MLB history to achieve this feat.
Manager Aaron Boone praised the team’s determination and grit in their performances so far.
On the other hand, the Astros, who reached the AL Championship Series for the seventh consecutive season last year, have started the season 0-3 for the first time since 2011.
Marcus Stroman, making his Yankees debut, earned the win after allowing three unearned runs in six innings. Stroman’s precise pitching impressed Boone, who described his performance as “awesome.”
The Astros held a 3-1 lead until Bryan Abreu, making his season debut after serving a suspension, allowed Cabrera’s home run. Soto then delivered the go-ahead run with his homer.
Despite Soto’s stellar performance, Cabrera’s exceptional start to the season has also been noteworthy, with seven hits and six RBIs in three games.
