Aston Villa, currently in fourth place, maintained their three-point lead over Tottenham in the race for Champions League football next season with a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Tottenham briefly moved ahead of Villa in the standings by winning against Luton earlier in the day.
However, Villa stood their ground at Villa Park and secured the win in the Midlands derby.
Moussa Diaby scored his first league goal of 2024 with an impressive strike and also provided an assist for Ezri Konsa. Diaby fired a powerful shot from outside the box to break his goal drought.
Konsa’s goal appeared to be unintended, as his off-target cross found its way into the net at the far post. “It’s a good feeling,” Konsa said. “Whether it was a cross or intentional, it’s still a goal!”
This season, Aston Villa is aiming to qualify for the Champions League for the first time. Wolverhampton currently sits in 10th place in the league standings.
