Juan Soto got three hits, including a single in the ninth inning that brought in the winning run, helping the New York Yankees beat the Houston Astros 4-3 on Sunday to complete a four-game sweep.
With the game tied at 3-3, Gleyber Torres singled with two outs in the ninth inning and stole second base. Then, Soto hit a single to left field, bringing in Torres for the winning run.
“Soto’s performance showed what we’ve seen from him in this series so far,” manager Aaron Boone commented. Soto, who joined the Yankees after being traded from San Diego, had a great start with the team, hitting .529 with four RBIs in his first four games. This is the first time the Yankees have started a season 4-0 since 2003.
“It’s the kind of start I was aiming for,” Soto said. “I worked hard during the offseason and in spring training to start the season successfully.” In the bottom of the ninth, the Astros had a chance to tie the game against pitcher Clay Holmes.
Although they got runners on base, including a pinch-runner, they couldn’t score, and the Yankees held on for the win.
“It’s exciting to watch these guys continue to compete, both on offense and defense,” Boone added. Nick Burdi earned his first major league win since 2019, pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Yankees’ bullpen didn’t allow any runs in the series, pitching a total of 15 1/3 innings.
The Astros, who have now lost nine straight home games, fought hard but couldn’t avoid the sweep. “I appreciate the effort,” said Astros manager Joe Espada. “That’s what it’s all about. Keep fighting until the last out, and if you do that, you have a chance to win games.”
The game was tied at 3-3 until the Astros scored two runs in the sixth inning to tie it up. However, the Yankees held on to secure the victory, with contributions from Giancarlo Stanton, Jose Trevino, and Aaron Judge.
