Arizona Diamondbacks player Geraldo Perdomo will undergo surgery on Monday to fix a tear in his right knee’s meniscus.
Perdomo, aged 24, was put on the 10-day injured list before Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves.
According to Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, there isn’t a precise timetable for Perdomo’s recovery, but typically, it takes six to eight weeks to recover from such surgery.
“It’s a setback for our team, but we need to figure out how to deal with it,” said Lovullo. In 2023, Perdomo was selected for the All-Star team, batting .246 with six home runs and 16 stolen bases.
Lovullo mentioned that if Perdomo had sustained a similar injury later in the season, he might have continued playing. However, both Perdomo and the team feel he should undergo surgery now for a healthier remainder of the 2024 season.
To fill Perdomo’s spot, Kevin Newman was called up from Triple-A Reno and played second base on Sunday. Lovullo expressed gratitude for Newman’s presence and mentioned that he would likely start against left-handed pitchers in a platoon with Jace Peterson. On Sunday, rookie Blaze Alexander took Perdomo’s place as the starting shortstop.
