Ryan Feltner pitched five innings to earn his first win of the season, and the Colorado Rockies had a whopping 20 hits in a 12-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.
Ryan McMahon was the star of the show with four hits, including three doubles, helping the Rockies break their losing streak in Canada with their first win in Toronto after nine consecutive losses.
“It’s a great start for us on this road trip,” McMahon said. “Hopefully, we can keep up the momentum tomorrow.”
This was the first time since 2022 that the Rockies reached the milestone of 20 hits in a game, and they hadn’t achieved this on the road since 2013.
“It’s a positive step for the team,” Rockies manager Bud Black commented. “This was a solid performance against a tough opponent.”
Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman struggled, allowing six runs and 10 hits in just 3 2/3 innings. His ERA climbed from 9.53 to 11.57 after this rough outing.
“Today was just a tough day all around,” Gausman admitted. “A lot of hits, a lot of runs. Not much went right.”
McMahon’s stellar performance included doubles in the third, sixth, and ninth innings, along with a single in the fourth. He contributed two RBIs and scored twice himself.
Nolan Jones and Ezequiel Tovar also hit home runs for the Rockies, while Kris Bryant added a two-run double to the offensive onslaught.
Brendan Rodgers, another key player for the Rockies, reached base four times and narrowly missed hitting for the cycle. He hit an RBI double, walked, singled, and tripled throughout the game.
Elías Díaz had a solid game, too, with two hits and two runs scored, extending his streak of games with at least one RBI to six.
On the pitching side, Feltner gave up two runs and eight hits, walking two batters and striking out four.“It wasn’t a perfect outing, but I managed to work through some tough situations,” Feltner reflected on his performance.
The Blue Jays got some consolation with solo home runs from Daulton Varsho and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, marking their first homers of the season.
The Rockies had previously struggled in three-game series at Toronto in 2002, 2007, and 2013. Their last 20-hit game was back in August 2022, and the last time they achieved this on the road was in June 2013.
