Jalen Green scored 26 points as the Houston Rockets spoiled Portland’s last home game of the season with a 116-107 win on Friday night.
Jock Landale contributed 20 points, and Aaron Holiday added 18 off the bench for Houston, who had already been ruled out of playoff contention. Rookie Amen Thompson recorded 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Rockets, playing their second game in two nights.
“I just wanted to play hard and bounce back after last night. I felt like our team brought good energy today, so that was positive,” Thompson said, reflecting on their previous loss against the Jazz.
Scoot Henderson led the Trail Blazers with 30 points. Portland has now lost four consecutive games and 14 of their last 16, currently sitting second-to-last in the Western Conference.
Although Houston led by 20 points in the third quarter, Portland narrowed the gap to 82-73 on Henderson’s dunk and free throw. However, a three-pointer by Cam Whitmore early in the fourth quarter reestablished Houston’s double-digit lead, and they maintained control for the rest of the game.
“It was a bit slow to start, but we had a strong second quarter. Many players stepped up and did positive things,” remarked Rockets coach Ime Udoka.
The Rockets were missing Fred VanVleet due to a hip contusion. Thompson, who also contributed six assists, stepped up in his absence. “I enjoy opportunities like this, where I get to develop in various positions, including point guard,” Thompson expressed.
Portland, plagued by injuries, had previously sidelined many of its regular starters. Despite a strong performance from Henderson, the Blazers couldn’t overcome the Rockets.
“I was pleased to see him come in and take charge of the game today while also taking care of the ball. Just one turnover. That was significant, especially against a team that pressures and forces turnovers,” commented Blazers coach Chauncey Billups on Henderson’s performance.
Although Henderson’s bank shot gave the Blazers an early lead, the Rockets closed the gap and maintained competitiveness throughout the game.
