Houston Dash winger Maria Sanchez, who signed a substantial contract in December, has requested a trade mere months after committing to one of the most lucrative deals in National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) history. Sources confirmed this development to ESPN. The NWSL trade and transfer windows are both set to close at midnight ET on Friday, adding urgency to Sanchez’s desire for a move.
Sanchez’s contract with Houston, spanning three years with an additional option year, was valued at $1.5 million, inclusive of bonuses and the optional fourth year. Despite its size, subsequent contracts in the league surpassed it shortly after signing. The Dash’s spokesperson reaffirmed Sanchez’s contractual obligations, emphasizing her choice of free agency at the conclusion of 2023.
As a restricted free agent during the recent offseason, Houston had the prerogative to match any offers from other NWSL teams to retain Sanchez’s rights. However, her contract with the league ensures continuity if she transitions to another team, with only a limited number of clubs able to accommodate her.
