Michigan State has a new football coach and quarterback this year. They might have an advantage because both were at Oregon State last season.
Jonathan Smith, who coached the Beavers for six years, was hired in late November, and quarterback Aidan Chiles followed shortly after.
Smith believes Chiles will be the starter this fall. “It would be surprising if he’s not,” Smith said.
Smith also brought with him Tanner Miller, an AP All-Pac 12 offensive linemen, and Jack Velling, an AP all-conference tight end who set a record at Oregon State with eight touchdown receptions.
These former Beavers have been helpful in teaching plays and terms to the team at Michigan State. “We’re coaches, but these three guys on offense have been valuable for everyone,” Smith said.
The new-look Spartans will finish spring practice on Saturday at Spartan Stadium. “We’re planning to scrimmage,” Smith said. “We want to create a game-like situation as much as possible.”
Smith signed a seven-year contract worth $7.25 million in his first season. He was hired after Mel Tucker was fired for personal reasons.
The Spartans started well under Tucker but struggled after he left. With interim coach Harlon Barnett, they lost eight of their last ten games.
Michigan State’s athletic director, Alan Haller, made a good move by hiring Smith quickly.
If Smith can turn things around at Michigan State, it wouldn’t be the first time. He had success at Oregon State, winning eight games last season and ten the year before.
