Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored goals as Everton defeated Liverpool 2-0 in the Premier League on Wednesday.
The victory at Goodison Park dealt a blow to Liverpool’s chances of winning the title this season and also helped Everton in their quest to avoid relegation.
Branthwaite found the net in the 27th minute after Liverpool failed to clear the ball following a free kick.
Calvert-Lewin doubled Everton’s lead in the 58th minute by heading home Dwight McNeil’s corner at the far post.
Jurgen Klopp was managing Liverpool for the last time in a Merseyside derby before stepping down at the end of the season.
Liverpool needed a win to draw level on points with Arsenal, who are in first place, and stay four points clear of defending champions Manchester City in third.
However, the defeat has put Liverpool’s title hopes in serious jeopardy, with only four games left in the season.
If Manchester City wins their two remaining games, they will move five points ahead of Klopp’s team.
Everton now sits eight points clear of the relegation zone.
