James Franklin makes 57-mile trip to celebrations for both of Penn State’s 1st-round NFL Draft picks

Penn State head coach James Franklin faced a logistical challenge on Thursday night as he aimed to attend the NFL draft parties for two of his former players, who were both first-round picks. The players, Olu Fashanu and Chop Robinson lived an hour apart in Maryland, adding complexity to Franklin’s plans.

Beginning in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Franklin witnessed Fashanu being selected No. 11 overall by the New York Jets. Expressing pride and admiration for Fashanu’s character and talent, Franklin conveyed his congratulations and well wishes to the lineman and his family.

Despite the swift celebration, Franklin had to swiftly transition to Waldorf, Maryland, a 57-mile journey, to attend Robinson’s draft party. Just over an hour after Fashanu’s selection, Robinson was chosen by the Miami Dolphins at No. 21 overall, with Franklin arriving just in time to witness the announcement.

Acknowledging Robinson’s achievement and expressing gratitude for his contributions to Penn State, Franklin conveyed his excitement for Robinson’s future with the Miami Dolphins.

Looking ahead to the second round of the draft, Franklin faces the reality that attending the draft parties of additional Penn State prospects may be impractical due to their diverse locations. With tight end Theo Johnson hailing from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and edge rusher Adisa Isaac residing in New York, Franklin may resort to sending congratulatory messages instead of attending in person.

Despite the challenges of timing and distance, Franklin’s dedication to supporting his former players reflects the strong bonds fostered within the Penn State football program and highlights his commitment to their success beyond college.
