Eagles trade up, draft Iowa DB DeJean at No. 40

The Eagles made a strategic move in the second round of the draft, choosing Cooper DeJean, a versatile defensive back from Iowa, who had garnered attention as a first-team All-American and Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year in 2023.

Despite DeJean’s initial projections for the first round, he was still available as Day 2 commenced. To secure him, Philadelphia traded both of their second-round picks along with a fifth-round pick to the Washington Commanders for selections 40 and 78.

With the 40th pick, the Eagles acquired DeJean, who showcased his defensive prowess with seven interceptions and 13 passes defensed over his last two seasons at Iowa, in addition to contributing as a punt returner. Although his 2023 season ended prematurely due to a broken fibula, he has since received medical clearance to resume playing, affirming his readiness to take the field if a game were held immediately.

DeJean’s determination was evident during his personal pro day in early April, where he reportedly clocked an impressive 4.43-second 40-yard dash. Having excelled in both cornerback and safety positions during his college career, there is speculation among evaluators regarding his role at the professional level. While some view him primarily as a safety, the Eagles organization sees him as a player capable of fulfilling various roles on the field.

Philadelphia’s decision to prioritize strengthening their secondary comes as no surprise, given their struggles in the 2023 season, where they ranked 31st in passing yards and passing touchdowns allowed.

Their offseason efforts reflect this commitment, evidenced by the signing of C.J. Gardner-Johnson in free agency, the selection of cornerback Quinyon Mitchell in the first round, and the addition of DeJean early in Day 2 of the draft. With these acquisitions, the Eagles aim to fortify their defense and improve their performance in the upcoming season.
