Erik Jones is poised to make a comeback to the NASCAR Cup Series following a two-race hiatus due to a back injury sustained during a crash at Talladega. Legacy Motor Club confirmed his return to the No. 43 car, but Jones won’t be hitting the track for the upcoming race at Kansas as a precautionary measure despite being cleared by doctors and NASCAR.
Although given the green light to race, Legacy Motor Club decided to exercise caution and allow Jones more time to recuperate. Jones himself expressed agreement with the decision via social media, emphasizing the importance of proper rest before getting back behind the wheel. In the interim, he’ll be present at the Kansas race to support his team.
Truck Series driver Corey Heim stepped in for Jones at Dover and will continue to do so at Kansas. Heim made an impressive Cup Series debut, qualifying 32nd and finishing 25th in his first outing. However, the spotlight remains on Jones, who is set to return to action at Darlington on May 12.
Jones’ return at Darlington comes with added stakes, as he’ll need to secure a win during the regular season to become eligible for the playoffs. Despite missing races, NASCAR has granted him a waiver for playoff eligibility. Currently, Jones sits 23rd in the standings, with a precarious position that could see him drop to 29th or 30th, making a playoff berth via points unlikely.
