Switzerland’s plans for the European Championship faced another setback Friday as a key player’s fitness remained uncertain for a second consecutive day.
Newcastle’s Fabian Schär joined Monaco’s Denis Zakaria in having their club coaches suggest they are unlikely to play again this month due to hamstring injuries.
“Fabian will be out for some time,” Newcastle coach Eddie Howe said Friday. “He won’t be available tomorrow, and I don’t think we’ll see him again this season.”
Monaco coach Adi Hütter offered a similar assessment Thursday for Zakaria, leaving the future availability of both expected Switzerland starters for Euro 2024 uncertain.
Switzerland coach Murat Yakin is set to announce his preferred players on May 17, with UEFA requiring squads to be finalized by June 7 — one week before the opening game.
Euro 2024 kicks off with a game in Switzerland’s group on June 14 when host Germany faces Scotland in Munich.
The Swiss start their campaign the next day against Hungary in Cologne, play Scotland in the same city on June 19, and face Germany in Frankfurt on June 23.
