Zac Gallen threw six scoreless innings in his first game in nearly two weeks, while Corbin Carroll’s three-run homer and five RBIs helped the Arizona Diamondbacks defeat the struggling Cincinnati Reds 6-2 on Tuesday night.
Gallen hadn’t started a game since April 26 due to a hamstring cramp. He gave up only one hit to the Reds in six innings, striking out six and walking three without allowing any runner to get past second base.
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo praised Gallen’s performance, noting that he became sharper as the game progressed but decided to turn to the bullpen after 79 pitches.
The Reds’ struggles continued, scoring just two runs in the previous three games against the Orioles. With this loss, Cincinnati dropped three games below .500 for the first time this season.
Frankie Montas, returning to the mound after being hit by a line drive in April, pitched well for the Reds, allowing only one earned run and four hits over six innings while striking out seven.
Carroll, who had only seven RBIs all season, contributed runs in the third and fifth innings before smashing a three-run homer in the seventh inning off Justin Wilson. Lovullo praised Carroll’s improvement throughout the season but admitted he didn’t expect him to drive in five runs in a single game.
Ketel Marte followed Carroll’s homer with another, marking only the second time this season that Arizona hit back-to-back homers. Despite the Reds’ loss, Jonathan India and Tyler Stephenson managed solo homers, accounting for two of the team’s three hits.
