Harrison Bader and Tyrone Taylor each knocked in two runs in the first inning, while star closer Edwin Díaz didn’t see action in a save situation. The New York Mets clinched a 7-3 victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday, marking only their second win in seven games.
Brandon Nimmo hit a home run and Francisco Lindor managed two singles after a rough stretch, helping the Mets bounce back from Saturday’s loss, where they blew a four-run lead in the ninth inning. The win also halted Miami’s four-game winning streak.
Pitcher Sean Manaea went five innings, allowing two runs and five hits. Sean Reid-Foley and Jake Diekman pitched an inning each, with Reed Garrett securing his second save after striking out four batters over two innings.
Despite Díaz’s recent struggles, Garrett expressed confidence in his teammate, emphasizing the team’s support for him. The Mets, who had fallen five games below .500, considered Sunday’s victory crucial for their morale and momentum moving forward.
In the ninth inning, with the score at 4-3 in favor of New York, Nimmo’s two-run homer off Anthony Bender extended their lead, with Brett Baty adding an RBI single.
“I was just searching for a good pitch right in the middle to hit,” Nimmo explained. “Luckily, I managed to connect with it well, with a good launch angle, and it carried over the fence.”
Nimmo rejoined the lineup on Saturday after sitting out two games due to a stomach bug.
“It’s been a bit of a rough ride the past three days battling through the illness,” Nimmo shared. “Right now, I’m just trying to regain my appetite. I’m not back to full strength yet, but I’m pushing through it, and I’m glad I could contribute in securing the win.”
Dane Myers slammed a two-run homer in the second inning, and Christian Bethancourt added a solo shot in the seventh against Diekman.
Sixto Sánchez (0-2) gave up four runs and six hits in four innings. He allowed Taylor’s double and Bader’s single in the first inning.
“He showed improvement from the second inning onwards, but we were already in a tough spot early on,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker noted. “At this level, it’s challenging to recover from a four-run deficit each time. He’s not giving his teammates a fair shot at winning.”
Miami called up right-handed reliever Emmanuel Ramirez from Jacksonville and sent right-handed reliever Anthony Maldonado to the Triple-A farm team.
