Alec Bohm homered and drove in five runs, while Bryce Harper doubled and added two RBIs as the Philadelphia Phillies completed their sixth series sweep of the season with an 11-5 win over the Washington Nationals on Sunday.
Kody Clemens hit two doubles and collected two RBIs for Philadelphia (34-14), which holds the most wins in the majors. The Phillies matched their franchise record for the best start in the first 48 games, equaling the 1976 and 1993 teams.
The Phillies have either won or tied each of the last 14 series, reaching 20 games over .500, which ties their season-best from last year.
“Obviously a cool little landmark,” Bohm said. “But we also understand it’s a long year, and we’re looking to play our best baseball down the stretch.”
Bohm emphasized the importance of consistently winning games: “You do that all year long and you’re going to be happy at the end of the year.”
Jesse Winker and Eddie Rosario homered for the Nationals, who concluded an 11-day, nine-game road trip with their fifth straight loss and seventh defeat in their last eight games, including the last three to Philadelphia.
“We’ve got to keep our heads up,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. “We have to keep going.” Aaron Nola (6-2) allowed two earned runs on two hits with five strikeouts and three walks in seven innings. It was Nola’s 100th quality start since 2018. He was coming off his fourth major league shutout.
“It’s crucial for starting pitchers to want to go deep in games,” Nola said. “That’s the biggest thing, the want.” The Phillies took the lead with four runs in the fifth off Trevor Williams and two relievers.
Williams exited after issuing a one-out walk to Kyle Schwarber. The Phillies loaded the bases against Jacob Barnes (2-1) when Bryson Stott walked and Harper singled. Bohm’s second sacrifice fly of the day tied the game at 3.
