Three years later, Francisco Lindor finally returned to where it all began. Stepping into Progressive Field as a visitor for the first time on Monday, Lindor was flooded with memories of celebratory moments and the heartbreak of a lost World Series.
Lindor was back in Cleveland, this time wearing the colors of the New York Mets after a blockbuster trade following the 2020 season.
With his trademark smile, Lindor appeared genuinely happy to be back. “I missed it,” he said before the game, standing outside the Mets’ clubhouse. “This place was my home for a while, and it feels wonderful to be back here. Definitely.”
Before batting practice, Lindor caught up with former teammate Carlos Carrasco, who also joined the Mets in the trade, as well as longtime radio broadcaster Tom Hamilton and Guardians star José Ramírez.
Lindor received a warm reception — with a few boos mixed in — before stepping up to bat in the first inning. He acknowledged the Guardians’ dugout before facing pitcher Ben Lively and striking out.
Despite going hitless in four at-bats, Lindor showcased his defensive prowess in the eighth inning. Making a remarkable play, he dived to his right to field a ball in the hole, then leapt up to make a throw that initially appeared late.
However, the Mets challenged the call, which was overturned upon review, and Lindor acknowledged the crowd with a bow.
Recently moved to the leadoff spot in the lineup in hopes of sparking his performance, Lindor acknowledged uncertainty about the reception he would receive.
“I have nothing but love for them, so I’ll show them my love,” he said. “I’ll give them an exciting performance this week.”
During his six seasons with Cleveland, Lindor evolved from a highly touted prospect to one of baseball’s top all-around players. With his stellar defense at shortstop, offensive contributions, and knack for delivering in crucial moments, Lindor played a key role in making the Guardians, formerly the Indians, perennial contenders.
