Braxton Garrett stayed in the game longer than Yu Darvish, while Josh Bell performed well with three hits and two runs scored, helping the Miami Marlins secure a 9-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, preventing a sweep.
Jesús Sánchez contributed with a solo home run, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. added two hits and drove in two runs as the Marlins achieved their season-best 16 hits and ended the Padres’ three-game winning streak. The Padres now have a home record of 13-19.
Garrett, who has a record of 2-0, showcased a strong performance for five innings, allowing only one run and six hits, with two strikeouts and no walks. Despite giving up a home run to Ha-Seong Kim in the third inning, Garrett, who was making just his fourth start this season due to a left shoulder injury during spring training, rebounded from his previous shutout against Arizona on Friday night.
Reflecting on his performance, Garrett admitted, “I wasn’t super sharp, but managed to get through with just the one run.” He acknowledged some challenges in finding his rhythm but praised the team’s effort in battling through.
The Marlins’ defense also played a crucial role, with plays by first baseman Josh Bell and left fielder Nick Gordon, showcasing their skills in critical moments of the game.
Manager Skip Schumaker emphasized the importance of solid defense, stating, “When we pitch and we play defense, we usually win. Today was another example of that.”
Although Garrett may not have been at his best, Schumaker expressed confidence in his ability to contribute to the team’s success whenever he takes the mound.
The Marlins concluded their six-game road trip with a 3-3 record, wrapping up their series in Arizona and San Diego.
