Willy Adames hit a run-scoring single in the 10th inning, helping the Milwaukee Brewers defeat the White Sox 4-3 on Saturday and prolonging Chicago’s losing streak to 10 games.
Adames also delivered a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning. “It was a solid win,” commented Brewers manager Pat Murphy. “The game could have easily gone the other way.”
Chicago’s Garrett Crochet pitched well, striking out eight batters over six innings while allowing only one run. Crochet has been a standout performer for the White Sox this season, maintaining strong form. In his last four starts, he has given up just two runs and has struck out 32 batters in his last 23 innings.
“I’ve been feeling good on the mound,” Crochet remarked. “Aside from one changeup I threw to (Joey) Ortiz tonight, I felt like my pitching was really on point.”
Andrew Benintendi and Gavin Sheets hit home runs, giving Crochet a 3-1 lead early in the game against rookie left-hander Robert Gasser.
Although Gasser allowed seven hits over five innings, he still managed three strikeouts without issuing a walk. In his first 29 innings in the majors, he has only allowed one walk and none in his last three starts. Hoby Milner (3-0) pitched the ninth inning for the Brewers.
“I didn’t perform as well as I wanted to today,” admitted Gasser. “But there’s always room for improvement, so I’ll take this as a learning experience.”
The Brewers’ offense came through in the seventh inning with Adames’ two-run single off right-handed reliever Jordan Leasure, tying the game. Adames’ winning single in the 10th inning, a grounder to short, was off Michael Kopech (1-5).
“I was just focusing on making contact with the ball,” Adames explained. “Especially in that situation, if you try to do too much, you might miss your chance.”
Chicago has lost 14 of its last 15 games, while the NL Central-leading Brewers have won four straight and seven of their last nine.
