Francisco Alvarez hit a home run and drove in three runs, Tyrone Taylor added a three-run homer, and the New York Mets beat the New York Yankees 12-2 on Wednesday night to complete a two-game Subway Series sweep.
Harrison Bader also hit a home run and had an RBI double for the Mets (39-39), who forced rookie Luis Gil (9-3) out of the game in the fifth inning. They hit seven home runs, scored 21 runs, and totaled 24 hits against Yankees pitchers over two nights at Citi Field.
“It’s enjoyable,” said Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor, who relished winning bragging rights for the Mets and their fans. “I think it’s fun for the barbershop. I think it’s fun for every workplace.”
With their 15th win in 19 games, the Mets returned to a .500 record for the first time since they were 18-18 before a May 10 loss to Atlanta.
“That’s not our main goal, but it does feel good that we are making progress,” Lindor said. “It’s a great thing when we can all hold each other accountable, and that’s what we’re doing right now.”
The struggling Yankees, leading the AL East, have lost four straight series and eight of their last 10 games.
“You don’t enjoy getting beaten like this. It’s been a tough two weeks for us. But it’s part of the game. We know it happens,” manager Aaron Boone said. “Adversity comes at you. We’re dealing with a bit of it right now.”
