Buddy Hield played 632 regular-season games and became known as one of the NBA’s top three-point shooters before finally appearing in the playoffs. He can credit the Philadelphia 76ers for helping him break his record of most games played without a playoff appearance.
To reach the playoffs again, he’ll need to aim for California, where he’ll join Stephen Curry.
The 76ers had a very busy offseason, partly because they had extra salary-cap space. On Thursday, they arranged a deal where Hield was traded to the Golden State Warriors for a 2031 second-round pick from the Dallas Mavericks, according to someone familiar with the agreement who spoke to The Associated Press. ESPN reported that Hield was going to sign a two-year, $21 million contract with the Warriors.
The Warriors needed another reliable player on the perimeter after losing Klay Thompson. Thompson agreed to join the Mavericks in a deal also involving the Warriors, Mavericks, and Charlotte Hornets, where he’ll earn $50 million over three years. The 76ers will receive an additional draft pick for their part in making the deal happen.
The trade involving Hield will be finalized after the NBA’s signing moratorium ends on Saturday, according to the person who spoke anonymously to the AP.
On Thursday, the 76ers also announced they signed their first-round draft pick Jared McCain. The former Duke player will compete in both the Salt Lake City Summer League and the NBA 2K25 Summer League 2024 in Las Vegas. McCain was chosen by Philadelphia as the No. 16 overall pick in last month’s draft.
During an offseason where they missed the playoffs, the Warriors are continuing to build their team. General manager Mike Dunleavy has said this is crucial for their team’s rebuilding process.
Earlier this week, a person familiar with the negotiations told the AP that the Warriors and free agent forward Kyle Anderson were finalizing a three-year, $27 million contract.
