John Cena announced on Saturday night that he plans to retire from professional wrestling next year after being in the ring for two decades.
The wrestler, who has also transitioned into acting, spoke to a crowd of World Wrestling Entertainment fans in Toronto. They expressed disappointment with boos as Cena shared that the 2025 season would mark his final year.
He pledged to embark on a farewell tour with numerous dates and a memorable last match. Cena reassured his fans that he will stay connected with the wrestling franchise where he began his career.
“Thank you so much for allowing me to perform in the house that you built over the years,” Cena expressed to the audience.
During a press conference following the event, Cena mentioned to reporters that he feels physically worn out but emphasized that he still holds a deep love for the sport.
Cena achieved fame as a 16-time WWE champion starting in the early 2000s. He gained popularity as the character “Doctor of Thuganomics,” known for his rap battles with opponents while dressed in gold chains and a backwards hat.
His career expanded into acting roles, starring in movies like “Blockers” and “The Suicide Squad.” He has also appeared in several installments of the “Fast & Furious” series and most recently in “Argylle” and “Barbie,” which were box office successes.
