Bronny James couldn’t play in the Los Angeles Lakers’ second California Classic game on Sunday because his left knee was swollen. This happened right after he scored four points during his debut in the NBA Summer League.
Dane Johnson, the Lakers Summer League coach, didn’t give a lot of details after their 92-68 loss to Golden State. He said they were taking it day by day and being cautious about Bronny’s condition.
“He was sitting on the end of the bench in his uniform with a white wrap around his left leg. A couple of times, he was picking at it.”
In Saturday’s game against Sacramento, James was 2 for 9 from the field, missed all three of his 3-point attempts and had two rebounds in 22 minutes.
“Midway through the fourth quarter, fans in Chase Center started clapping and shouting, ‘We want Bronny! We want Bronny!'”
James was picked by the Lakers in the 55th overall selection after spending a year at the University of Southern California. His dad, LeBron James, is in Las Vegas getting ready with Team USA for the Olympics in Paris. It will be his fourth Olympics.
The Lakers are 0-2, and their next game is against Miami on Wednesday, the last day of the California Classic. It’s their last chance to win before the Las Vegas Summer League starts on Friday.
Johnson said whether James will play against Miami is up to the team’s medical staff.
“Our trainers handle that. They give me updates. So, hopefully, you guys will have more information later.”
