The Cincinnati Reds traded left-handed reliever Alex Young to the San Francisco Giants for outfielder Austin Slater and cash.
After the trade was finalized late Sunday night, the Giants announced that Young would be sent down to Triple-A Sacramento.
Slater, 31, is leaving San Francisco for the first time in his eight-year MLB career. He has a batting average of .200 with one home run and nine RBIs in 43 games this season.
Despite recent injuries including elbow surgery last October and hamstring strains, Slater has been a dependable pinch-hitter.
According to Reds general manager Brad Meador, the trade was beneficial for both teams.
Young, 30, pitched just two innings in three appearances for the Reds this season. He previously played for the Giants in 2022 after being acquired from the Guardians and also spent time with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2019 to 2021 over parts of six seasons in the majors.
