Kyrie Irving injured his left hand during a workout in the offseason and underwent surgery. The Dallas Mavericks announced the injury on Tuesday night but did not specify how long Irving might be out.
Irving and Luka Doncic played key roles in taking the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in their first full season together. However, they lost the championship series to Boston in five games.
Irving, who is 32 years old, averaged 25.6 points in 58 games during the regular season despite dealing with foot, heel, and thumb injuries.
This playoff run marked Irving’s deepest since reaching the finals with Cleveland in 2017. He contributed significantly to the Mavericks’ success, helping them reach the finals for the first time since winning the NBA title in 2011.
The team stated that updates on Irving’s condition would be provided as necessary, with the training camp set to begin in approximately 2 1/2 months.
