Julio Rodríguez, a star player for the Mariners, is currently dealing with a day-to-day injury due to a sprained right ankle. This happened when he collided with the center-field fence while attempting to catch a long hit by Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros on Sunday.
After the collision, Rodríguez grabbed his ankle in pain and stayed on the ground for a few minutes. Eventually, he walked off the field with Seattle’s athletic trainer Taylor Bennett and manager Scott Servais during the sixth inning.
To fill his spot in center field, Victor Robles moved over from right field, Luke Raley shifted from first base to right field, and Ty France entered the game to play first base.
Initial X-rays on Rodríguez’s ankle showed no major damage, but he is expected to undergo an MRI before he can return to playing.
Mariners manager Scott Servais provided an update, saying, “He’s got a little bit of an ankle sprain there. Right now what I’ve been told is it’s going to be day-to-day. We’ll see where it’s at there. So I think hopefully, knock on wood, we escaped something there — but what an effort.”
Despite Rodríguez’s injury, Yordan Alvarez managed to hit an RBI triple and complete a cycle in the game, which ended with Seattle winning 6-4.
Recently, Rodríguez has been performing well at bat after a slow start to the season. Over his last 12 games, he has hit .459 with four home runs and eight RBIs, along with a .524 on-base percentage and a 1.389 OPS.
