Daniel Suárez made the most of NASCAR’s Olympic break.
He married his long-time girlfriend, Julia Piquet, on July 30, and then raced in the NASCAR Brasil Series’ Special Edition shortly after. Now, the focus shifts back to the Cup Series, which races at Richmond on Sunday night.
Before that, it was announced on Friday that Suárez and Freeway Insurance will stay with the No. 99 Chevrolet at Trackhouse through 2025.
This clarifies who Suárez will be driving for next year, but there is still some uncertainty about the future.
“There are a lot of things in the contract that become active if we both decide it’s the right thing to do. There are many changes happening at Trackhouse,” Suárez said on Saturday.
“Performance-wise, we are not exactly where we want to be — not just with the No. 99 but with Trackhouse as a whole. We need to fix that before considering any long-term plans. This is a two-way street.”
Suárez earned his second career Cup win in February at Atlanta. He can officially secure a playoff spot this weekend, but he is currently 17th in the driver standings. Ross Chastain, who drives the No. 1 car for Trackhouse, is close to the playoff cutoff line but currently on the right side of it.
