The Chicago White Sox claimed right-handed pitcher Enyel De Los Santos off waivers from the New York Yankees on Saturday. This move is part of several roster changes made by the team, which currently has the worst record in the majors.
The White Sox also brought right-hander Gus Varland back from Triple-A Charlotte, put right-hander Steven Wilson on the 15-day injured list, and moved right-hander Mike Clevinger to the 60-day injured list.
De Los Santos, who was acquired by the Yankees from San Diego on July 30, pitched in five games for New York, giving up 10 runs in 6 1/3 innings. He was designated for assignment on Wednesday.
This season, he has a record of 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA in 49 games. In six major league seasons, he has a 14-6 record with a 4.52 ERA in 214 games, mostly in relief roles.
Varland was available to pitch in Saturday’s game against Houston. He was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 2 and had a 3.86 ERA in four appearances for Triple-A Charlotte. He had a 3.00 ERA in seven appearances with the Dodgers this season.
Wilson is dealing with a lower back strain. This season, he has a record of 1-6 with a 5.71 ERA in 40 games.
Clevinger had neck surgery on August 1 that ended his season. He made four starts this year, with a 0-3 record and a 6.75 ERA.
