Dutch striker Memphis Depay arrived early Wednesday at Guarulhos international airport in Sao Paulo after signing a two-year contract with the Brazilian soccer team Corinthians.
The 30-year-old Depay, who moved from Spanish team Atletico Madrid on a free transfer, is expected to be introduced to fans later at the Neo Quimica Arena before Corinthians plays the second leg of their Brazilian Cup quarterfinal against Juventude. Corinthians, with more than 35 million fans, lost the first leg 2-1.
Depay is set to hold a press conference at the same stadium on Thursday morning.
On Tuesday afternoon, Depay left Rotterdam in a Gulfstream G550 jet and posted a picture of the plane on his social media with the caption: “Going home.”
The former PSV Eindhoven player also represented the Netherlands at the European Championship.
Other European players who have played for Brazilian clubs include Clarence Seedorf at Botafogo, Serbian Dejan Petkovic, who had multiple stints and is still celebrated by Flamengo fans, and Frenchman Dimitri Payet, who is currently with Vasco da Gama.
Depay, who completed his medical tests in the Netherlands earlier this week, has previously played for Manchester United, Lyon, and Barcelona before his time at Atletico Madrid.
Corinthians is currently working to avoid relegation in the Brazilian league with 13 rounds left. The team is also in the quarterfinals of the Brazilian Cup and the Copa Sudamericana, South America’s second most important club tournament.
