Former Miami Marlins general manager Michael Hill has been elevated to Major League Baseball’s senior vice president of on-field operations and workforce development, while April Brown has been promoted to senior vice president of social responsibility and diversity.
These promotions come after the passing of Billy Bean, who was the senior vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion until he died on August 6 from acute myeloid leukemia.
Hill graduated from Harvard in 1993 and was selected in the 31st round of that year’s amateur draft. He played two seasons in the Class-A New York-Penn League before working for Tampa Bay from 1997 to 1999 as an assistant in scouting and player development.
He became the director of player development for Colorado in 1999 and joined the Marlins as an assistant general manager in 2002.
Hill was named general manager on September 29, 2007, and six years later became president of baseball operations, shortly after Larry Beinfest was let go.
After being fired on October 18, 2020, when Derek Jeter took over as CEO of the Marlins, Hill was hired by MLB as senior vice president of on-field operations on February 1, 2021. He will continue to oversee on-field discipline and manage the diversity pipeline program within the front office and on-field areas.
Brown, who earned her undergraduate degree from Binghamton University and a master’s from Columbia, joined MLB in September 2021 as vice president of social responsibility.
She was promoted in 2023 to senior vice president of social responsibility and community affairs, where she will lead MLB’s diversity initiatives along with social responsibility and community relations.
