Carlos Palacios scored in the second half on Tuesday, helping Chile’s Colo Colo secure a 1-1 draw against River Plate in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores quarterfinal match.
Germán Pezzella gave the visitors the lead in the 43rd minute, but Palacios equalized with his goal in the 61st minute.
The second leg is set for next Tuesday at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
Before that, River Plate will face Boca Juniors next weekend in the Argentine league before playing Colo Colo again.
Both teams ended the match with 10 players after Maximiliano Falcon and Paulo Diaz were sent off in the 90th minute.
Marcelo Gallardo, who led River Plate to Copa Libertadores titles in 2015 and 2018, reached 100 matches as a coach in the tournament. He is now third all-time, behind Luis Cubilla (104) and Gabriel Uribe (116).
The winner of this matchup will face the winner of the series between reigning champion Fluminense and Atletico Mineiro, who are competing on Wednesday.
In the other quarterfinal matchups, Sao Paulo will go up against Botafogo, while Flamengo will take on Peñarol.
