Victor Boniface made a strong impression for Bayer Leverkusen during their return to the Champions League on Thursday, even though he didn’t score.
In the buildup to their second goal in a 4-0 victory over Feyenoord, the Nigerian striker showcased impressive footwork that earned him praise from teammates and soccer fans online.
While positioned near the edge of the area, Boniface faked a shot with his right foot but instead passed the ball with his left foot to Jeremie Frimpong, all in one smooth motion.
Frimpong then crossed the ball for Alex Grimaldo, who scored the second goal in the 30th minute.
Leverkusen forward Florian Wirtz described this move as Boniface’s signature, stating, “I think he’s the best at doing it in the soccer world.”
Leverkusen’s coach, Xabi Alonso, referred to it as the “Boni-trick.”
“When it works, we’re happy,” Alonso said about the skill Boniface practices often in training. “When it doesn’t, we need to keep it simpler.”
Wirtz scored the first and third goals for Leverkusen, who excited European soccer last season by going unbeaten in Germany to win the league and cup, while also reaching the Europa League final, where they lost to Atalanta.
This was Wirtz’s first Champions League match.
“We were just happy to be playing in the Champions League again,” the Germany international told DAZN. “I didn’t expect to finish with two goals, but I had two chances and I took them both.”
