Four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz defeated Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5, helping Team Europe come back to beat Team World 13-11 and win the Laver Cup on Sunday.

Alcaraz broke Fritz’s serve in the 11th game and finished the match on his own serve, leading to celebrations with the Europe team and their captain, Björn Borg, in Berlin.

Team World was favored to win the Laver Cup for the third year in a row, having a lead of 8-4 in points going into the final day.

Europe started their comeback on Sunday when Alcaraz and Casper Ruud won the doubles match 6-2, 7-6 (6) against the American duo of Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe.

However, Shelton then defeated Daniil Medvedev, the Australian Open finalist, with a score of 6-7 (6), 7-5, 10-7, putting Team World back in a strong position.

Tiafoe, who reached the U.S. Open semifinals, could have secured the win for Team World but lost to Alexander Zverev, the French Open finalist, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 10-5, which set up the final match between Alcaraz and Fritz.

The Laver Cup is set up like golf’s Ryder Cup, where the first team to reach 13 points wins. Each of the four matches on Sunday was worth three points.

Europe’s only victory on Saturday came from Alcaraz, who won both the French Open and Wimbledon this year.

On Sunday, the 21-year-old Spaniard once again demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure.
