Skip Schumaker, the manager of the Miami Marlins, will not return for the 2025 season, marking the end of his two-year tenure with the team. Sources revealed that Schumaker communicated his decision to players after a decisive 15-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. He also announced that he would miss the final two games of the season to attend to a family matter. With his departure, Schumaker has become one of the most sought-after managerial free agents this winter.

During his time with the Marlins, Schumaker achieved significant recognition, winning the National League Manager of the Year award last season. Under his leadership, the team made a surprising postseason run, which elevated expectations for the franchise.

However, following the resignation of general manager Kim Ng in October and a subsequent restructuring of the team’s management, Schumaker’s contract was altered, removing the team option for the 2025 season. This restructuring signaled a shift in the Marlins’ organizational strategy.

The Marlins, now under new president of baseball operations Peter Bendix, are undergoing a full rebuild. The team has traded several key players from last season’s playoff roster, including two-time batting champion Luis Arráez and infielder/outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Although this rebuilding effort has bolstered the farm system and added major league-ready talent, the current season has been a stark contrast to last year’s success, resulting in a disappointing 60-100 record. Injuries to key pitchers, including Sandy Alcantara and Eury Perez, further complicated Schumaker’s ability to maintain a stable rotation.

Despite the team’s struggles, Schumaker’s reputation remains strong in the baseball community. His background as a former player and his managerial experience have made him highly regarded within the industry. As he becomes available, he is expected to be a leading candidate for managerial openings, particularly with the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox. Both teams are currently seeking new leadership, and Schumaker’s experience could provide the necessary direction.

In addition to the Reds and White Sox, other franchises with uncertain managerial futures—such as the Toronto Blue Jays and the Colorado Rockies—may also consider Schumaker.

While the Blue Jays’ John Schneider and Rockies’ Bud Black face uncertain futures, Schumaker’s extensive career, including his time as a bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, positions him as an attractive option for teams looking to revamp their leadership. As the offseason approaches, Schumaker’s next career move is expected to be closely monitored by those within the sport.
