Former Netherlands midfielder Kevin Strootman announced on Friday that he is retiring from soccer.
The 34-year-old Strootman played 46 games for the Netherlands and scored three goals. He is currently without a club after his contract with the Italian team Genoa ended.
He shared his retirement news with a short message on social media.
“Careers come to an end. Thank you, football,” he wrote.
Strootman played for several Dutch teams, including PSV Eindhoven, before moving abroad to join AS Roma, where he played from 2013 to 2018. He also had spells at Marseille and Cagliari.
Strootman missed the 2014 World Cup in Brazil due to a serious knee injury, despite being an important player during the qualifying rounds.
