Azerbaijan and Spain have shown interest in hosting the men’s Champions League final in 2027 after UEFA reopened bidding for the biggest club match in European soccer.
The final is planned to be held at either Baku’s Olympic Stadium or the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, as both were listed by UEFA on Wednesday as interested bidders.
UEFA stated that the final proposals need to be submitted by March 19, with the decision on the host city expected in May.
The search for a new location began after UEFA’s executive committee chose not to give the final to Milan’s famous San Siro stadium.
UEFA had allowed extra time for Milan to confirm that the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza would be available during renovation work planned between the 2026 Winter Olympics and the 2032 European Championship. However, city officials could not provide those assurances.
Baku hosted matches during the European Championship in 2021 and was the site of the Europa League final between Chelsea and Arsenal in 2019.
The Metropolitano Stadium has previously held the Champions League final, which took place in 2019 when Liverpool defeated Tottenham 2-0.
On the same day, UEFA announced that four bidders are interested in hosting the Women’s Champions League final in 2027: Poland (Warsaw), Spain (Barcelona), Switzerland (Basel), and Wales (Cardiff).
