Banks, drafted in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has had a challenging season, previously giving up plays to Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb. His struggle with consistency led to his benching on Monday, where Greg Stroman Jr., elevated from the practice squad, filled in as his replacement. Daboll declined to elaborate on the specific reasons for benching Banks but emphasized focusing on moving forward and preparing him mentally for the upcoming week’s game.
During the Monday game, Banks’ missed tackles were a major issue, including one where he was hurdled by Steelers running back Najee Harris and another involving receiver George Pickens. His 26 defensive snaps were cut short after a series of missed opportunities early in the second quarter. This season, Banks has recorded 32 tackles, six passes defended, and one forced fumble, but he has yet to meet the expectations set for him as a potential shutdown cornerback.
Despite some difficulties, Banks has shown glimpses of potential, notably in his coverage of Seattle’s DK Metcalf earlier in the season. Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen has often assigned him to cover opposing teams’ top receivers, which has yielded mixed results. According to NextGen Stats, Banks is tied for second in the NFL with four touchdowns allowed as the nearest defender, and he currently has a 129.4 QB rating against him, a significant increase from his performance last year.
Meanwhile, Daniel Jones retained his starting position despite his own struggles against the Steelers, where he missed a critical sack protection and threw an interception on the final drive. Daboll noted several positives in Jones’ play, particularly his decision-making and deep throws, including one to Darius Slayton. While the Giants have had a tough season so far, Daboll remains hopeful about both Jones’ and Banks’ abilities to make improvements as the team continues to seek more consistent performances.
