The “OMG” spirit is coming to Cooperstown.
After their exciting run to the National League Championship Series last month, the New York Mets gave the Baseball Hall of Fame one of the blue-and-orange OMG signs that players often raised during joyful moments throughout the season.
The specific sign donated, which was used by the pitching staff during dugout celebrations, has arrived at the Hall of Fame and will soon be displayed in the “Your Team Today” exhibit to celebrate “the excitement of the Mets’ 2024 season,” the Hall of Fame announced on Tuesday.
This sign will be part of the Museum’s permanent collection.
“OMG” is the popular song by Mets infielder José Iglesias, who performed it under the stage name Candelita. It became an anthem for the team at Citi Field this year.
The signs, designed by local artist and lifelong Mets fan Jerome McCroy, became well-known to baseball fans across the country as the Mets, who started as wild-card contenders, advanced through the playoffs.
They were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 of the NLCS, falling just two wins short of reaching the World Series.
When the Hall of Fame was putting together its 2024 postseason collection, they asked the Mets if they could donate one of the signs. The Mets reached out to Iglesias and pitcher Luis Severino, who were the keepers of the signs, and they were happy to agree.
Another OMG sign, used by the hitters to celebrate big swings, will be displayed in the Mets’ Hall of Fame at Citi Field, the team said.
