Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy apologized on social media Tuesday, just one day after expressing frustration with his team’s critics.
Gundy is facing a tough situation this season. With 169 wins over 20 years at Oklahoma State, including 18 consecutive bowl appearances, he has been very successful.
His team was expected to be a strong contender for the Big 12 title this year, but the Cowboys are currently at the bottom of the standings with a 3-6 record (0-6 in conference play) as they head into Saturday’s game at TCU. The Cowboys have lost six games in a row and need to win all their remaining games to avoid a losing season.
During his weekly media session on Monday, a frustrated Gundy spoke out against the team’s critics.
“In most cases, the people that are negative and voicing their opinion are the same ones that can’t pay their own bills,” Gundy said. “They’re not taking care of themselves.
They’re not taking care of their own family. They’re not taking care of their own job. But they have an obligation to speak out and complain about others because it makes them feel better.
But then, in the end, when they go to bed at night, they’re the same failure that they were before they said anything negative about anybody else.”
After receiving criticism for his comments, Gundy changed his stance and issued an apology.
“I apologize to those who my comments during Monday’s media call offended,” he said. “My intent was not to offend any of our fans who have supported us and this program through the years.”
Gundy has apologized before. In 2020, he apologized after referring to COVID-19 as the “Chinese Virus,” and again later that year after wearing a T-shirt featuring the far-right One America News Network, which led to tension with star running back Chuba Hubbard.
