Matt Coronato scored the tying goal late in the third period and then netted the game-winner just seven seconds into overtime, leading the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night.

As soon as overtime started, Coronato took the puck from Nick Suzuki, skated into the circle, and fired it past the goalie for his first career overtime goal in three NHL seasons.

Earlier, Coronato had tied the game at 17:14 of the third period with another shot from the circle that went through traffic. This goal brought his season total to four and his career total to seven.

Connor Zary also scored for the Flames, while Dustin Wolf made 21 saves on 23 shots to earn his fourth win in six starts this season. Calgary secured its second win in three games.

Montreal’s losing streak extended to four games (0-3-1). Joel Armia scored a short-handed goal and added an assist for the Canadiens, and Brendan Gallagher scored on the power play.

Montreal Canadiens celebrates a goal

Sam Montembeault stopped 33 of 36 shots, facing heavy pressure as Calgary outshot Montreal 26-8 after the first period.

Despite being outshot, the Canadiens were unlucky, with four of their shots hitting the goalpost. Brendan Gallagher also thought he had scored another goal in the third period, but a video review showed Josh Anderson was just offside before the play.

Calgary took the lead 4:20 into the second period when a scramble in front of the Montreal net led to their first goal. Daniil Miromanov’s shot was blocked by Emil Heineman, and the puck appeared to deflect off downed Flames forward Nazem Kadri.

This left Connor Zary with the chance to score on the loose puck, giving him his third goal of the season.

The Canadiens tied the game 16:23 into the second period when Joel Armia passed to an open Brendan Gallagher in front of the net, and Gallagher scored his fifth goal.

Montreal took a 3-2 lead at 5:56 of the third period with a short-handed goal. Armia and Jake Evans had a two-on-one break during Calgary’s power play, and Armia finished the play to score his second goal of the season.

Calgary forward Anthony Mantha did not return to the ice after suffering a lower-body injury late in the first period.
