Pete Alonso’s future with the Mets seems uncertain, even though he’s a fan favorite and nearing the milestone of becoming the franchise’s all-time home run leader. Despite his significant October performance, the Mets appear to be prioritizing superstar Juan Soto over Alonso at the moment. As a result, other teams are emerging as potential suitors for the slugger.
The San Francisco Giants are always searching for big-name players to boost their roster. Alonso could be an ideal fit, given the team’s need for power hitters. However, the Giants have had difficulty landing major stars in recent years, which could hinder their ability to pursue a trade or signing for Alonso this offseason.
The Seattle Mariners also have an opening for an offensive upgrade, but Alonso might face challenges in their pitcher-friendly ballpark, which is particularly tough on right-handed hitters. There’s also little expectation that the Mariners will be big spenders in the free-agent market, making a move for Alonso unlikely. Similarly, the Houston Astros appear to be focused on retaining Alex Bregman and could instead opt for a more cost-effective option at first base.
Other teams that could potentially target Alonso include the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, and Arizona Diamondbacks. The Blue Jays could shift Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to third base to accommodate Alonso, while the Red Sox have been rumored to consider trading Triston Casas, though that may not come to fruition. The Phillies are unlikely to disrupt their successful first-base setup with Bryce Harper. The Orioles could be a more aggressive suitor under their new ownership, and the Diamondbacks might keep Alonso in mind if they lose Christian Walker.
