Freshman wide receiver Jacory Barney Jr. had a standout performance for Nebraska football in their recent 44-25 victory over Wisconsin, earning him the Big Ten Conference’s Freshman of the Week honor. This recognition announced two days after the game, marks the first such award of Barney’s collegiate career and highlights his impact in a pivotal win for the Cornhuskers.
Barney set career-high marks with nine receptions and 85 receiving yards against Wisconsin, in addition to a 45-yard kickoff return that helped him accumulate 150 all-purpose yards. He also contributed an 11-yard rush, demonstrating his versatility in securing Nebraska’s bowl game eligibility. The performance showcased his ability to deliver in crucial moments as Nebraska aims to finish the season strong.
Throughout the season, Barney has been a consistent and reliable target for fellow freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola. The Wisconsin game was Barney’s fourth with at least five catches and third such performance in Big Ten play. Additionally, he broke Nebraska’s single-season record for true freshman receptions, surpassing Wandale Robinson’s 40 catches in 2019. With 49 receptions, Barney is now chasing the all-time freshman record set by JD Spielman in 2017 with 55 catches.
Barney’s contributions extend beyond receiving, as he leads the team in receptions and has added 402 receiving yards, 130 rushing yards, and three rushing touchdowns. His special teams prowess is evident with 232 kickoff return yards, cementing him as one of Nebraska’s most dynamic playmakers. The Florida native’s versatility and consistent production have been critical to Nebraska’s success this season.
Barney is the second Nebraska freshman to win a Big Ten weekly honor this season, joining quarterback Dylan Raiola, who earned the accolade in the season opener against UTEP. Nebraska will conclude its regular season on Black Friday with a rivalry matchup against Iowa in Kinnick Stadium, with the game set to air on NBC at 6:30 p.m. CST.
