Evan Svoboda threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to John Michael Gyllenborg with 24 seconds left to help Wyoming beat Washington State 15-14 on Saturday night in the Cowboys’ season finale.
Wyoming (3-9) only scored through John Hoyland’s field goals in the first three quarters, with kicks from 40, 22, and 42 yards, until Svoboda’s game-winning pass.
Washington State took the lead early when John Mateer threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Williams on the Cougars’ second possession, putting them ahead 7-0. Wyoming responded with Hoyland’s first field goal with 4 seconds left, trailing 7-3.
The Cougars extended their lead to 14-3 at the 9:32 mark in the second quarter when Mateer finished a 10-play, 74-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.
Later, Ethan Day recovered a fumble by Mateer at the Wyoming 35-yard line with 51 seconds left in the first half. Svoboda moved the Cowboys to the Cougars’ 5-yard line but had to settle for another short field goal from Hoyland, making it 14-6 at halftime.
Hoyland’s third field goal, the only score of the third quarter, completed a 14-play drive, bringing Wyoming within five points. Washington State went three-and-out twice in the third quarter, running just 12 plays.
Svoboda’s touchdown pass came at the end of a 14-play, 90-yard drive that started with 3:38 left to play.
Svoboda finished with 206 yards, completing 21 of 34 passes with one interception for Wyoming.
Mateer completed 16 of 22 passes for 182 yards with one interception for Washington State (8-4), who is waiting for a bowl-game opponent. He also ran 18 times for 56 yards.
