Two Union County athletes have taken significant steps toward their collegiate athletic careers, signing to play at the next level this week. Gavin Jenkins, a star cornerback, will compete in Division 1 football at South Florida, while Devin Diggs will join the University of North Florida’s esteemed baseball program. Both athletes have excelled on the field and credit their time with the Fightin’ Tigers for their development.
Gavin Jenkins chose South Florida after an impressive high school career marked by 10 interceptions, nearly 75 tackles, and 11 tackles for loss. Staying close to home was important for Jenkins, who plans to major in sports management. A pivotal conversation with his mother helped solidify his decision, with Jenkins describing the decision-making process as challenging but ultimately leading to the right choice.
Devin Diggs, another standout athlete from Union County, is headed to the University of North Florida, where he will play baseball and pursue a degree in sports management. Known for his power at the plate, Diggs recorded three home runs and nearly 20 RBIs last season. Reflecting on his time with the Fightin’ Tigers, he praised the program’s tough but supportive approach, which he believes set him up for success at the collegiate level.
Both Jenkins and Diggs embody the spirit of hard work and resilience fostered by Union County athletics. As they move on to their respective universities, they carry not only personal achievements but also the pride of their community, eager to make their mark in their sports at the next level.
