New York City FC announced today that midfielder Maxi Moralez has re-signed with the team through 2025.
Moralez made an immediate impact last season after recovering from an ACL injury he suffered at the end of 2023. He played in 26 games across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing seven assists.
With this, he reached an important personal milestone, contributing to 100 career goals, joining David Villa (103) as the only players in the club’s history to achieve this. Additionally, Moralez became the first player in the team’s history to make more than 200 MLS appearances.
“We are thrilled to have Maxi back with New York City FC for the upcoming season,” said Sporting Director David Lee. “Maxi showed incredible resilience in returning from his injury and proved his quality with excellent performances last year. His leadership and creativity helped us return to the playoffs and inspired those around him.
Maxi’s influence goes beyond just his play on the field; he plays an essential role in the locker room and in guiding our younger players. As we continue to grow, having a player with Maxi’s skill and experience is critical, and we’re excited to see his contributions this season.”
Moralez made his debut for the 2024 season in the 74th minute off the bench in a match against the San Jose Earthquakes at Yankee Stadium last May. In that game, he registered his first assist of the 2024 season, which was also his 70th career assist for New York City.
The 37-year-old scored his first goal of the season in the Hudson River Derby in the fifth minute, helping secure a 5-1 win. He also assisted on New York City’s fifth goal, setting up Tayvon Gray for his first career goal. Moralez earned a spot on the MLS Team of the Week twice last season.
“I’m very excited to continue my career with New York City FC for another season,” said Moralez. “This club has become a second home to me. I’m incredibly thankful for the trust and support I’ve received from everyone here, from the coaching staff to my teammates and, of course, our amazing fans.
Returning from injury last season was tough, but also rewarding. Being able to contribute to the team’s success again meant a lot to me. I’m looking forward to next season and am determined to help the club achieve even more in 2025.”
During the club’s historic 2021 MLS Cup run, Moralez played in all four matches, contributing a goal and three assists. He assisted on New York City FC’s only goal in the final and scored a crucial penalty during the shootout in Portland, helping the team secure its first-ever championship. The following season, Moralez scored a decisive goal in the 2022 Campeones Cup at Yankee Stadium.
