Florida State University has announced the hiring of Josh Turner as its new deputy athletic director and chief financial officer (CFO). The news was shared by ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Tuesday, despite challenging weather conditions in Tallahassee. Turner will transition from Georgia Southern University, where he served as senior associate athletic director and CFO since February 2024. His career also includes significant roles with the Tampa Bay Rays and IMG Academy, bringing diverse experience to his new role at FSU.

Turner’s Background and Role at Georgia Southern

Before joining Florida State, Turner was a key leader at Georgia Southern, where he managed human resources and supervised volleyball and baseball programs. He was also deeply involved in the university’s athletic budgeting processes and financial reporting.

In addition, Turner played a significant role in developing the athletics strategic plan and facilities master plan, contributing to the department’s growth and success. His work at Georgia Southern provided him with extensive experience in athletics administration and financial management.

Key Experience at Miami and Other Roles

Turner’s previous role at the University of Miami involved managing a $164 million operating budget, the largest in Miami Athletics history. He also handled multi-million-dollar capital budgets for facility upgrades. His experience in overseeing such large budgets and working closely with the football program was instrumental in ensuring Miami’s athletic success. Prior to this, Turner worked with IMG Academy and the Tampa Bay Rays, further enriching his understanding of sports administration from both collegiate and professional perspectives.

Turner’s hiring represents a significant shift in Florida State’s athletic department. As athletic director Michael Alford reorganizes the leadership team, Turner’s experience in financial management, human resources, and strategic planning will help strengthen FSU’s athletic programs. His leadership is expected to support Florida State’s continued growth and success in the competitive landscape of collegiate sports.
