Inspired by Subban, Bill Zonnon Carries Montreal Pride and Togo Roots into Penguins Future

Growing up in Montreal, Bill Zonnon looked up to P.K. Subban, the charismatic and trailblazing defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens. As a young Black player in a sport where representation was limited, Zonnon found confidence and identity in Subban’s fearless authenticity and swagger.

That influence still resonates with him today as he begins his professional hockey journey with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Zonnon says the biggest lesson he learned from Subban was to always be himself, regardless of outside opinions.

From Togo to Montreal, Zonnon’s Roots and Work Ethic Shape NHL Dream

Zonnon’s journey began with his parents, Augustin and Mathilde, who emigrated from Togo to Canada for their studies. Born and raised in Montreal, Zonnon grew up speaking French and living what he describes as a “normal” childhood. Although he visited Togo briefly at age four, his strongest cultural ties remain grounded in his Montreal upbringing, yet he acknowledges the importance of remembering his origins and where his family came from.

Zonnon’s hard work and impressive performance in junior hockey culminated in him being selected 22nd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2025 NHL Draft. He was one of three first-round picks made by the team, highlighting their investment in his potential.

With 83 points in 64 games for Rouyn-Noranda of the QMJHL, he proved himself a skilled and driven forward. Penguins GM Kyle Dubas and the front office were particularly impressed by Zonnon’s work ethic, intelligence, and commitment, which were evident during the draft combine.

Early Connection with Kris Letang Fuels Hope for Growth and Future Mentorship

His Montreal roots also led to an indirect connection with Penguins veteran Kris Letang. Sharing the same agent, Philippe Lecavalier, the two have skated at the same facility, although Zonnon admits Letang likely didn’t notice him before the draft.

That changed on draft night when Letang and his son announced Zonnon’s name in Los Angeles. The brief post-draft conversation they shared may mark the beginning of a mentorship that could shape Zonnon’s development as he prepares for future training camps.

Despite his confidence and “swag,” Zonnon remains grounded about the path ahead. He acknowledges he is still far from reaching the NHL but is determined to make the most of the resources now available to him.

With support from mentors and a strong internal drive, Zonnon is committed to working hard and earning his place on the Penguins roster in the years to come. “Hopefully, in a couple of years, you’ll see me wearing that jersey,” he said, keeping his eyes on the ultimate goal.
