The Detroit Lions may not be finished fortifying their defensive line for the upcoming 2025 NFL season. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the team is still in the market for a defensive end, and they’ve even entertained the possibility of signing a notable free agent with local ties.
One name that has emerged in discussions is veteran edge rusher Matthew Judon, a former standout for both the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots.
Judon’s Proven Versatility and Local Roots Make Him an Appealing Option for Lions
Matthew Judon, originally from West Bloomfield, Michigan, and a Grand Valley State alum, began his professional career as a fifth-round draft pick of the Ravens. While his NFL career started slowly, Judon developed into a dominant pass rusher, earning four consecutive Pro Bowl selections, two with Baltimore and two with New England.

His peak seasons came in 2021 and 2022 when he notched 12.5 and 15.5 sacks, respectively. In 2023, a torn bicep prematurely ended his campaign with the Patriots, and he later signed with the Atlanta Falcons, where he started 15 games and recorded 5.5 sacks.
At 6-foot-3 and 275 pounds, Judon offers a balanced skill set. Though best known for his pass-rushing abilities, his size makes him a competent run defender. Additionally, he has experience dropping into coverage, having logged at least 90 coverage snaps in each of his first five seasons as a starter, according to Pro Football Focus. This versatility could make him a valuable asset for a team looking to enhance its depth and experience on the edge.
Campbell Prioritizes Youth Development Before Pursuing Veteran Edge Rushers Like Judon
Despite the potential interest in Judon, Lions head coach Dan Campbell has made it clear that his primary focus is on the players already in the building. When asked about the team’s defensive end situation, Campbell said he’s currently evaluating the young talent already on the roster. He emphasized the importance of seeing what the current group can develop into before making any further personnel decisions.
The Lions’ young defensive end prospects will have a chance to showcase their talent soon. Players like rookie Ahmed Hassanein and fellow young defenders Nate Lynn, Isaac Ukwu, and Mitchell Agude, all 26 or younger, will get their first opportunity in game action during the Hall of Fame Game against the Los Angeles Chargers next Thursday. Their performances could influence whether the Lions make a move for a veteran like Judon before the regular season kicks off.
