Darron Lee, 31, a former NFL first-round draft pick, was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree murder following the death of his girlfriend, the Hamilton County (Tenn.) Sheriff’s Office reported. First responders found the victim on Tuesday afternoon. Despite attempts at life-saving measures, she was pronounced dead. Detectives ruled the death a homicide, and Lee was taken into custody at the scene.

Former NFL Linebacker Lee’s Career Marred by Suspensions Before Recent Arrest

Lee built his football reputation at Ohio State, earning second-team All-American honors and defensive MVP recognition during the 2015 College Football Playoff semifinal win against Alabama. The New York Jets selected him 20th in the 2016 NFL Draft. During three seasons with the Jets, Lee started 36 games and appeared in 40, recording 241 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, four sacks, and three interceptions. A four-game suspension in 2018 for a substance abuse violation limited his progress, and the Jets declined his fifth-year option.

In 2019, Lee joined the Kansas City Chiefs, appearing in 16 games but starting only twice. He was inactive during the team’s Super Bowl LIV victory and faced another four-game suspension in the following offseason. Lee later played briefly with the Buffalo Bills in 2020 and joined the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021, but was released during training camp.

Lee’s arrest comes as investigators continue to examine the circumstances of his girlfriend’s death. Authorities have indicated that more details and potential charges could emerge as the case develops.
